Osteosarcoma Diagnosis Revealed by Broken Foot in Sixth Grader
A sixth-grader at Creekside Christian Academy, Dylan McCabe, was found to have bone cancer in his right leg when he had incurred a broken bone over his Christmas break.
Tammy McCabe, Dylan’s mother, said, “It was a blessing that he broke his foot, because we wouldn’t have known otherwise.”
McCabe’s mother, a month after he received his injury, wondered why her son’s foot was still swollen when the doctor removed his cast. Many theories were put forward, tried, and found to be false. That is, until they made another trip to an orthopedist where x-rays had revealed that Dylan was suffering from a rare cancer, osteosarcoma.
The tumor in his leg measured fourteen inches in length and sat between his hipbone and knee. “The doctors said it had probably been growing for six months,” said Tammy McCabe. “Dylan never complained about any pain, though.”

Broken Foot Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
A broken foot is caused by one of the bones in the foot ‘breaking’, or fracturing. Bones typically break when the bone is bended, crushed, or stretched beyond its natural capabilities. Usually the location of the fracture indicates how the break occurred, whether it was through an object, fall, or any other type of injury.
Common Symptoms of Broken Feet:
· Blue (foot)
Those who are experiencing any of these symptoms, or suspect that they have a broken foot, should seek medical attention in a center where x-rays can be performed. This is especially urgent if any of the symptoms include numbness, blue coloring, cold feet, cuts, misshapen toes or deformities as these indicate more severe cases.
